How to Pay for CityBus
CityBus accepts several fare-payment methods.
You can:
- Pay the exact cash fare when boarding
- Use a reloadable CityBus smart card
- Pay using the EZfare mobile app
- Use an eligible CityBus pass
Bus drivers do not make change, so exact fare is required when paying cash.
Reloadable CityBus smart cards currently cost $4 and are available from the CityBus Center and Administrative Office.
CityBus has discontinued the sale of physical tokens, although previously issued tokens continue to be accepted until further notice.
EZfare Mobile Bus Passes

CityBus Service for Purdue University
CityBus still provides transportation connecting Purdue University and the surrounding Greater Lafayette community, but an important change occurred beginning with the 2025–26 academic year.
CityBus no longer operates Purdue’s former campus-loop system. Purdue selected another provider for those campus-loop routes.
CityBus continues to operate other routes serving Purdue and West Lafayette, including routes connecting the campus area with locations outside campus.
If you’re traveling to or from Purdue, check the current CityBus route planner rather than relying on an older campus-route map.

CityBus Express Routes
Some routes designated with an “E” are Express Routes and use different fare rules.
The current general-public Express fare is $5.00, valid for two hours on Express Routes.
Regular unlimited-ride passes generally cannot be used as fare on Express Routes. Residents of certain apartment communities served under CityBus contracts may ride eligible Express Routes without paying when they show the required authorized resident ID.
Check the individual route before boarding if the route number contains an E.
Is CityBus Accessible for Wheelchairs?
Yes.
CityBus states that all fixed-route buses are ADA accessible.
Buses include:
- Wheelchair ramps
- The ability to lower the bus for easier boarding
- Announcements of upcoming stops
- Visual displays showing upcoming stops
Ask the driver if you need assistance boarding.
CityBus ACCESS Paratransit
People whose disabilities prevent them from using the regular fixed-route system may qualify for CityBus ACCESS.
ACCESS is an ADA paratransit service and requires an eligibility/certification process.
ACCESS Phone
765-742-2121

ACCESS-certified riders can ride regular CityBus fixed routes fare-free when showing their ACCESS photo ID.
ACCESS trips must be reserved in advance. CityBus recommends calling at least one day before the trip, and reservations can generally be made up to 14 days ahead.

Local Tips
Use the trip planner before leaving. The 2026 route changes affected several Lafayette routes, so an older route map or saved schedule may no longer be accurate.
Check real-time bus information. MyCityBus can show GPS-based bus locations and route alerts, which is especially helpful when you’re unfamiliar with a stop.
Have exact cash if you’re paying onboard. Drivers do not make change.
Watch for the “E” on Express Routes. Express routes have different fare rules from ordinary fixed routes.
Don’t confuse ACCESS with medical transportation. ACCESS is ADA paratransit for riders whose disabilities prevent them from using fixed-route buses. It is not specifically a Medicaid or medical-ride program. For medical transportation options, see Transportation Help in Tippecanoe County.
