Homestead Deduction

The Homestead Deduction is available for a qualifying property that you own and use as your principal residence.

Indiana provides both a Standard Homestead Deduction and Supplemental Homestead Deduction. Recent state legislation is changing the amounts over several years.

If you already receive the Homestead Deduction, you generally do not need to apply every year.

Over-65 Property Tax Credit

Indiana’s former Over-65 Deduction has been replaced by an Over-65 Credit.

The credit provides a reduction against qualifying property taxes rather than reducing the property’s assessed value.

Eligibility includes age, ownership, residency and income requirements.

Over-65 Circuit Breaker Credit

This is different from the regular Over-65 Credit.

The Over-65 Circuit Breaker Credit can protect qualifying senior homeowners from large year-to-year increases in property taxes.

For eligible homeowners, it generally limits the increase in property tax liability on the qualifying homestead to 2% over the previous year’s tax liability.

Age, income, ownership, residency and property-value requirements apply.

Blind or Disabled Property Tax Credit

Indiana replaced the former Blind/Disabled Deduction with a Blind/Disabled Property Tax Credit.

Applicants must meet Indiana’s eligibility requirements and provide the required documentation.

Disabled Veteran Property Tax Benefits

Indiana provides property tax benefits for qualifying disabled veterans and, in some circumstances, surviving spouses.

Eligibility varies depending on disability status, military service and the particular benefit.
